Spooky Fall Fun Facts for Prescott Neighbors
The leaves are turning, the nights are getting longer, and Halloween is right around the corner. Fall in the Prescott area brings a lot of creepy-crawly activity, and a lot of it has a real explanation. Here are some fun, slightly spooky facts to share this season.
Spooky Fall Fun Facts
- Why so many spiders? Fall is mating season for many spider species, which is why you may notice more large spiders wandering around.
- Snake gatherings. Some snake species gather by the hundreds, or even thousands, in communal winter dens called hibernacula.
- Trees that "bleed." Certain trees produce a reddish sap that looks like blood when the bark is damaged.
- A haunted-forest glow. Some bioluminescent fungi give off an eerie green light.
- Haunting night calls. Fall territorial and courtship activity in some owl species can fill nighttime forests with strange calls.
- Creaking trees. Trees can creak, groan, and crack as temperatures change and wind moves their branches.
- Bat colonies. Some bat species gather in enormous colonies before they migrate or settle in for winter dormancy.
- Exploding ants. Certain tropical ants rupture their own bodies to release sticky, toxic secretions onto enemies.
- Mosquito radar. Female mosquitoes can detect the carbon dioxide in your breath from surprisingly far away, which helps them find their next meal.
- Bombardier beetles. These beetles defend themselves by spraying a hot, irritating chemical from their abdomens.
